Stick With What You’re Good At

Posted by THINK NATIVE on Feb 20, 2020 10:32:19 AM

Sometimes we’re so driven by the latest, hottest things that we can forget the wisdom found in the old saying, “Work with what you know.” Sure, it might not be as exciting, but sticking with the basics really does work.

And every good business person knows the basics - Strategic, Financial, People, and Operations Management, Basic Accounting, Marketing, and Sales. We’re not here to tell you what you already know. But beyond these essential elements, it’s important that you stick with your expertise and what your organization is truly good at.

Of course, don’t limit yourself, dip your toe in the lake of the latest and greatest! Go ahead and expand your social media presence; try out the Bitcoin, engage with the latest Millennial trends -- but don’t let those things distract you from what you’re really good at. Don’t let them overshadow your overall mission.

The pitfall of many would-be great organizations is the tendency to fall prey to the shiny things.

So many promising companies have had their clarity and focus too easily distracted, ultimately stealing their potential impact on the world around them. The very thing they set out to do was derailed by mere trappings. We don’t want that to be you.

The side salad and dessert are great, but they’re not the meat and potatoes - don’t forget why you came to the table in the first place!

It’s absolutely imperative to spend time on the front end of your business ventures digging deep to figure out why you exist. Wrestle to find it and don’t let it go. Once you’ve identified the why, get to work laying down  the solid foundation, alongside the other leaders united with your vision. And then stick to what you’re really great at. Whether that be your innovative product(s), or your amazing customer service, or your vast network opportunities, whatever it is, put it out front and center, above all else your organization does. Don’t let them forget why you’re out here.

Do what you do and go all out.

In the words of Pamela Grow, writer, author, and fundraising consultant, “There will always be a new tool to explore or a new viral campaign that looks massively appealing from where you’re sitting...But it’s when you have a deep understanding—when you truly grasp what donor-focused relationship fundraising truly is—that’s when you’ll know if that new tool is worth your effort.”

Most important of all, however, is to make sure that once you make your initial connections, that your strategies and systems following are strong. If you don’t have a follow-up plan in place, it’s more than likely that even the most valuable of relationships will fall through the cracks, too weak to stand for the long haul.

We live in an exciting, yet overwhelming world, where new facets of making everyday life rapidly evolve. Literally every day, there’s a newer, faster, more efficient way to do basically anything. As a person in the business or nonprofit sector, that can be intimidating! We want to help.

We want to come alongside you, helping to create and sustain an impact that becomes your legacy. Stick with what you're good at and we'll help everyone know about it. There are so many people just waiting to hear about you and the work you’re doing in the world. Let us help expand that reach, today. GET STARTED!
